SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

SPF measures the length of time a product protects against skin redness from UVB rays compared to how long the skin takes to redden without protection. For example, if your skin reddens in the sun 1 hour without sunscreen, it will take 15 times as long (15 hours) to redden with an SPF 15, though it may take up to 24 hours for this redness to appear. A broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15, which blocks 93% of UVB (SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB) is recommended whenever you are outside, though one should never stay outside unprotected for an extended period of time. Because products boasting an SPF above 30 offer negligible additional protection benefits and instill false confidence in consumers, the FDA has suggested capping the SPF rating at 30+.

B a s a l C e l l C a r c i n o m a ( B C C ) The most common form of skin cancer caused by chronic exposure to sun as well as intense, intermittent exposure. BCC occurs most frequently on sun-exposed parts of the body. It may look like a scar or like a sore that doesn’t heal and can sometimes ooze and crust over. Or, it may appear as a pearly raised bump in colors ranging from white to pink to tan and black.
S q u a m o u s C e l l C a r c i n o m a ( S C C ) Mostly caused by chronic exposure to sunlight, and appearing most frequently on sun-exposed parts of the body (including neck, shoulders, hands). May appear as a raised pink or red scaly patch or bump that occasionally bleeds and crusts. It may also look like a wart-like or elevated growth. Can also occur where skin has suffered certain types of injuries such as burns or long-standing sores.

Melanoma

The most dangerous form of skin cancer which can arise in an existing mole. While most moles or spots on your skin are normal, any new mole or spot or any change in an existing mole or spot may be a warning sign. Be aware of the ABCDs.
